SUPPORTING WILLIAM OSLER HEALTH SYSTEM

Hockey Night in Brampton returns for third year

The City of Brampton is excited to announce the return of Hockey Night in Brampton this August, in support of William Osler Health System Foundation (Osler Foundation). Coaches Wendel Clark and Doug Gilmour are excited to come back for another year and as the returning champ, Coach Gilmour is ready to play.

This year’s line-up is already shaping up with former NHL defenseman and Canadian gold medalist, Chris Pronger and star players from the Women’s Canadian National team Tessa Bonhomme and Renata Fast joining the roster.

Last year, the event raised $1,000,000 for Osler Foundation and $100,000 for the John Tavares Foundation and the City is hoping to exceed that number this year.

Proceeds from ticket sales will benefit William Osler Health System (Osler) as we work to build Brampton’s new Peel Memorial Hospital. One of the busiest community hospital systems in Canada, Osler continues to play a critical role in supporting the health and well-being of our community. The City of Brampton is working to support our community’s health and Peel Memorial Hospital redevelopment through events like Hockey Night in Brampton so we can ensure more specialized health care services are available for our residents, close to home.

About Wendel Clark

Wendel Clark was drafted first overall by the Toronto Maple Leafs in the 1985 NHL Entry Draft. His physical style of play and offensive talent built the foundation of a great career and later led to Clark becoming the captain of the storied Maple Leafs. He led by example and was the one working the hardest, scoring the big goals and doing whatever was needed to win. In 793 career NHL games Clark recorded 564 points and 1690 Penalty Minutes playing for Toronto, Quebec, NY Islanders, Tampa Bay, Detroit & Chicago. Clark also represented Canada in the ’85 World Juniors winning Gold. He currently resides with his family in Toronto and keeps busy as an Ambassador with the Leafs plus various charitable causes and has a restaurant chain Wendel Clark’s Classic Grill.

About Doug Gilmour

If there is a player who inspires near-hysteria among the Leafs Nation, it is Doug Gilmour. Selected by St. Louis in the seventh round, he eventually started in 1983 when the Blues’ depleted roster required a call-up. Nicknamed ‘Killer’ for his intensity, Gilmour played like a man much larger. After five seasons and the 1987 Canada Cup tournament, the Blues traded Gilmour to Calgary. That year, he was a star in the playoffs (22 points in 22 games) and the Flames won their only Stanley Cup. After three more seasons, he was traded to Toronto in the biggest deal in league history. In his first full season, he earned 127 points, a Maple Leaf franchise record and still won the Frank Selke trophy for best defensive forward! The Leafs made him captain in 1994, which he remained until he was traded to New Jersey in 1997. He then bounced between Chicago, Buffalo and Montreal before returning to Toronto. In 1656 games, he finished with 510 goals and 1092 assists for 1602 points. Doug was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2011. Doug works with many different charity groups lending his name and time to great causes and works with the Toronto Maple Leafs as an Ambassador along with other Leafs greats like Clark and Sittler.

Player Profiles

Chris Pronger

Drafted second overall in 1993 by the Hartford Whalers, he spent two seasons there before being traded to the St. Louis Blues. In St. Louis, his numbers began to expand on all fronts: points, plus/minus, and PIMs. By 1997, he was the team captain and would play nine seasons with the Blues. His best year came in 2000 when Pronger finished the season with 62 points and a 52-plus rating. This earned him both the Norris and the Hart Trophies, making him the first player to do so since Bobby Orr. He played key roles in Edmonton’s run to the Stanley Cup Finals in 2006 and in Anaheim’s Stanley Cup win in 2007. He would also go on to captain the Philadelphia Flyers before concussion issues forced him to end his playing career in December of 2011. He was the youngest member of Canada’s men’s hockey team at the 1998 Nagano Olympics and played for Canada in the 2002, 2006 and 2010 Olympic Games winning Gold Medals in 2002 and 2010. He is a member of the exclusive Triple Gold Club, winning World Juniors, World Championships and Olympics. Chris was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2015. Prongers career stats including regular, and playoffs are 1,1340 Games, 819 points and 1,916 penalty mins.

Tessa Bonhomme

Tessa Bonhomme is a member of the Canadian National Women’s Team and was a member of Canada’s Gold Medal winning team at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics. Bonhomme has also won 2 Gold Medals and 3 Silver Medals at the World Championships and won a Silver Medal at the 2009 Canada Cup. She played four years of NCAA hockey at Ohio State University. In addition to her hockey career, Bonhomme has also pursued a career in broadcasting. In 2011, Bonhomme became the first female hockey player to compete on CBC’s Battle of The Blades, which she won with skating partner David Pelletier. She previously worked for Leafs TV and since September 2014, she has been a host and reporter for TSN’s SportsCenter. Recently Tessa has added Podcast host to her resume with the launch of Jocks in Jills, a weekly show covering the inaugural season of the PWHL.

Renata Fast

Renata has been very busy since joining us at last year’s HNIB! She is leading her PWHL Toronto team into the playoffs, but also won GOLD at this year’s World Championships in the USA. Fast has been member of the Canadian National Team since 2015 winning a gold medal at the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympic Games and a silver medal at the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympic Games. Renata is an active member of her community, helping coach and mentor minor hockey players. She founded her own hockey camp that runs through the summer months to inspire the next generation and promote an active lifestyle.
